High-Density Lipoproteins: Atherosclerosis

Phenytoin's ability to raise HDL-C levels and to improve the HDU/LDL cholesterol ratio has been well documented, suggesting a role for PHT as a preventive in atherosclerosis (see Clinical: Cardiovascular section). This evidence, taken together with the fact that PHT protects brain, cardiac and other tissues against the damaging effects of hypoxia or ischernia, as in stroke or myocardial infarction, makes this a promising area for PHT's clinical use.
